HOBOKEN — A fire that displaced eight families on Sunday afternoon was caused by a lit cigarette, city officials said Tuesday.
Officials said the cigarette came from someone smoking on the rooftop.
The three-alarm fire damaged three wood-framed buildings at 128 Park Ave. around 4:45 p.m.
Two fire captains and a firefighter had minor injuries.
Mayor Dawn Zimmer said Tuesday that she wanted to remind tenants to make sure they get renter’s insurance if they can, as landlords will not always do it for them.
“It broke my heart,” Zimmer said of Sunday’s fire, “to look at people’s homes burning down, and they don’t have any insurance. They lost everything.”
