The Bayonne Hockey Association is participating in USA Hockey’s Hockey Weekend Across America from Jan. 29 to the 31.
The effort is aimed at two major objectives with a weekend of events at the local and national level to promote hockey. The objectives are to celebrate the game and all involved in the sport throughout the nation by using all means possible and to provide opportunities for those who haven’t played hockey to try it, resulting ultimately in more people playing the game at all levels.
On Friday, Jan. 29, USA Hockey encourages members, fans and others to wear your favorite hockey jersey to school, work or elsewhere. Whether you throw on your youth hockey team’s jersey for school (assuming that you do not have a uniform requirement) or don your favorite NHL jersey at work, you can help spread your passion for hockey throughout the day.
On Saturday, Jan. 30, it is Bring a Friend to the Rink Day. The Bayonne Hockey Association has a free hockey clinic at the Richard Korpi Ice Rink at Bayonne High School from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., to which all are welcome. Additionally, you can come as a fan to see the teams play games at Korpi Ice Rink that day at 7, 8:15, and 10:45 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Finally, there are public skating sessions Saturday afternoon and evening that the Bayonne Hockey Association suggests you attend with a friend.
Every hockey community has individuals who help make the game great for its players, coaches and fans. Sunday, Jan. 31, is a day to honor these hockey heroes, and the Bayonne Hockey Association Inc. has nominated Bayonne residents Leo Mahon and Joe Grotkewicz as its 2010 Local Hockey Heroes. Leo and Joe keep the ice safe and the rink clean as Board of Education employees, who also watch out for all the kids in the BHAI programs. They are accommodating and professional in everything they do, and this lets the players, coaches and parents concentrate on the practices and games. The organization is lucky to have such friends at the rink, and to have this opportunity to thank Leo and Joe as its 2010 Local Hockey Heroes.
