UNION CITY — Frank Scarafile, a political foe of Union City Mayor Brian Stack who was arrested two months ago after he and his allies allegedly handed out anti-Stack flyers that Stack claims appeared to be forged with his signature, announced Wednesday night that he will run for one of the five open Board of Commissioners seats in that town in May.
In Union City’s form of government, the five commissioners choose a mayor from among themselves. Thus, Scarafile could become mayor.
Scarafile said he is part of a “Change 4 Union City” ticket, although the other members are unknown so far.
Scarafile is a lifelong resident of Union City. His father, Frank Scarafile Sr., served as Union City’s deputy chief of police under the late Mayor William V. Musto.
Scarafile is the superintendent of schools in Little Ferry, N.J., and is a former principal in Union City.
Scarafile’s daughters attend the Union City public schools. Scarfile is married to the former Soraya Castillo, a 24-year special education teacher in the Union City School system.
Scarafile and his allies who were arrested have filed a counterclaim against the city and the Police Department. The matter has not yet been adjudicated. Scarafile called the arrest “political retaliation.”
