A mass of Christian burial took place March 3 for John Scafidi, 90. He passed away at his home on Feb. 27. John was born in Sorrentini, Sicily and traveled to America with his mother when he was nine years old to join his father and older brother Carmine (Buddy) in Jersey City. Here, John was introduced to a new way of life, including such things as English, playing softball and American schools. John attended No. 6 school and Dickinson High School. At Dickinson, John was introduced to the violin, where he became quite a musical star there. Upon graduation, John attended The Juilliard School of Music until he was drafted by the U.S. Army. He was a master sergeant in the Army and it was at Fort Tacoma where he fell in love with his wife Margie. They were married in Sunburst, Montana and came back to Jersey City to share their lives together. Together they worked and owned the Family Market Fruit and Vegetable Store for over 60 years. Also, for many years, they were both local committee people serving their neighborhood as well. John was also a Jersey City Building Inspector for over 25 years. John raised a family of six children. He is survived by his wife Marjorie and children, John, Gino (Eugene), Judy (Judith), Jerry (Gerard) and Janette. He was predeceased by his daughter Joann. John also has two daughters-in-law, Angela and Marcy as well as the gift of two grandchildren, John and Patrice. John surrounded his world with books, flowers, family, public service and music. Once his children were grown, he and his wife Margie traveled the world, always coming back with stories and luggage filled with gifts. It was as if he could bring back a piece of each country and experience to share with his family and friends. Now our Dad, Husband, Pop Pop, Uncle and Friend has traveled once again, this time to a place which we cannot share with him. To a place where he is young once more, growing his grapes and beautiful gardens, playing sweet music on his violin, reading and discussing literature with literary greats, discussing politics with anyone who will listen, designing his next magnificent fruit basket and now, sharing stories with his daughter, brother and friends who are there to greet him. Services arranged by the McLaughlin Funeral Home, Jersey City.
