Thank God it’s JC Fridays

Citywide art event returns this week

JC Fridays, the four-times-per-year citywide celebration of free arts and culture, is back this coming Friday, March 5.
The series was launched in spring 2005 by a group of Jersey City artists, arts organizations, and business owners to better promote the arts in the city. Since its inception, the number of participating venues has increase greatly thanks to increased outreach efforts.

The artists

Local artist Joan Marie Palmer is looking forward to the exposure. She will be showing “The Fear Collection” from her “Nocturnal Emissions” series, which are oil paintings of abstract images on round canvas.
Palmer described her work as an expression of “basically inside emotions as determined by outside influences and everyday life.”
The exhibit will be at the Quantum Vita Body Therapy, a massage spa located at 317 Grove St., a few blocks north of City Hall from 7-9 p.m.
“JC Fridays has really grown and taken off, and I will get a lot of exposure,” Palmer said.
Christine Goodman has seen JC Fridays grow to a major event from its humble beginnings as a handful of cultural events in September 2005 organized by local arts groups, including Goodman’s own Arthouse Productions.
Goodman mentioned five events that will be particularly interesting this time, especially to newbies:
• From 7-10 p.m. the 32 Jones Gallery presents “Phantasmagoria,” a collection of new works by North Jersey artist Adam Ramirez. This show is featured at the Pride Connections Center of New Jersey and Hudson Pride Connections, 32 Jones St., (973) 600-2269.
• From 5 to 8 p.m., the Jersey City Museum presents the Opening Reception for the Spring 2010 Exhibitions. Jersey City Museum invites all to Target First Fridays for a special evening including performance by Segunda Quimbamba at 6:30 p.m. Tickets for 6:30 p.m. performance are $7. 350 Montgomery St., (201) 413-0303 ext. 141.
• From 6-8 p.m., the Saffron presents a Closing Reception for “Solitude,” a photography exhibition by local photographer, William John Moore. 217 Newark Ave., (800) 516-0014.

• From 8-11 p.m. Arthouse Productions presents an Opening Reception for “inventionREinvention,” a multimedia group exhibition. 1 McWilliams Place, 6th Floor, (201) 915-9911.
Goodman is looking forward to the “invention/REinvention” multimedia exhibition that will be based in her home location in the one of the old St. Francis Hospital buildings still standing near Hamilton Park.
“There will be everything from wearable art to sculpture and installation,” Goodman said. “It is about the reinventing of the everyday.”
Goodman also is working with other organizers to put an interactive map on the JC Fridays website to make it easy for people to find the locations for the events.
