UNION CITY AND BEYOND – Palisades Emergency Residence Shelter (PERC) Shelter in Union City will be featured on the Oprah Winfrey Show on Tuesday in a segment focusing on Malaak Compton-Rock, wife of actor Chris Rock, where she is offering 100 ways to make life more meaningful.
Mrs. Rock visited PERC Shelter, along with daughters Lola and Zahra, to highlight the growing problem of the working poor. She is the founder and executive director of StyleWorks, a non-profit salon that provides free services for women leaving welfare and entering the workforce. She is also known for her personal philanthropy including the Angel Rock Project and UNICEF.
The Rock family, who reside in Bergen County, donated and served food at PERC’s nightly Community Dinner, provided toiletry kits, and met with family shelter residents. Lola and Zahra gave toys from their own playroom to benefit local children.
PERC was founded on the principal that “with help there is hope.” For 29 years, PERC has empowered thousands of men, women and children living in poverty by providing shelter, food, education, children’s programs, training, and access to mainstream services.
