Dear Editor:
I just wanted to give a heads-up to Beth Mason: Ms. Mason…..the election is over. You lost. Like it or not, Dawn Zimmer is our mayor. That fact is not about my political leanings or whom I may have voted for. That fact is just….a fact. There is no need to continue to campaign. Please, please, can you wait at least a little longer before starting to (once again) inundate the citizens of Hoboken with your political flyers? I know ward elections are next year, but do you have to start already?
If you so disagree with Ms. Zimmer, I’m sure the Hoboken Reporter would be more than happy to publish any letter you might write, and that it would reach a wide audience on their pages. Or maybe you could have a community meeting, and use that forum as a stage from which you could talk about your disappointment and issues with the current administration. The full-color political flyers in every door and on every door step are really not at all necessary. Politics aside, it’s annoying to the residents. It contributes to our trash problems and – in interesting contrast – while the new mayor is trying to make City Hall more “green” by doing things like working toward more energy efficient lighting and recycling, you are killing trees and creating mountains of unwanted waste with your political mailings.
I don’t doubt that you want to contribute to our fair city, and I commend anyone who is brave enough to go into politics to do so. But perhaps a better outlet for the large amount of cash you and “Friends of Beth Mason for City Council” must be spending on these full-color political flyers would be for you to create something positive for the community you serve. I’m sure there are many after-school programs, community centers and other worthy charities/organizations in our city who would gladly accept the money you and your friends seem to have to spare, despite these tough economic times. An added bonus to taking this approach might even be that in the end, voters in the next election will perhaps look more kindly on a candidate who put their resources into supporting the community at large and the government we do have in place while it’s in place, rather than the candidate whose bitter political flyers littered our streets.
