Dear Editor:
Attending the Hoboken High School Hall of Fame dinner on March 27th, I ran into Ed Groomes who played basketball at Hoboken High in the mid 60’s.
As a gracious gentleman, a star player called Lefty, is still the unassuming low-keyed person he always was. If my memory serves me right, Ed Groomes was the only player from Hoboken ever to score 50 or more points in at least two games as a player, one I was there for.
When I brought the conversation to Ed, he made his accomplishments seem vague and uneventful. He also noted that he was surrounded by athletes who made him look better. Seeing the class of 2010 inductees, helped me to recall the tradition of “Hoboken humbleness.”
Ed Groomes, quietly walked away without being noticed, the was he was, humbled with the game of humility.
