Vote for up to five commissioners in Union City this Tuesday

Union City residents may vote on May 11 for any five candidates for the Board of Commissioners. From among the five winners, they will choose a mayor from among themselves.
Running for office this year is the incumbent slate of commissioners led by Mayor Brian Stack (Union City First), who hopes to remain mayor. Challenging him are five candidates led by Frank Scarafile (Vision 4 Union City), who says he expects to be that group’s mayor if they win.
Hours to vote on Tuesday are 7 a.m. until 8 p.m. To find out where to vote near you contact the City Clerk’s office at (201) 348-5731.

Free health exams offered at health fair

N orth Hudson Community Action Corporation’s WIC (Women, Infant & Children) program will hold its Third Annual ‘Spring Into Health Fair’ on May 14 from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Miller Stadium (on Jackson Street, between 57th and 58th streets) in West New York.
Free cholesterol, blood pressure and glucose tests will be available, along with food, nutritional and health information, and free games, prizes and giveaway items. For more information call (201) 795-9521.

Walkathon and Mother’s Day event need volunteers

Volunteers are needed for both the upcoming West New York Women’s Club walkathon and for this Sunday’s “Taste of West New York” Senior Citizens Mother’s Day Event.
Individuals interested in volunteering or information for either event can email wnywomensclub@aol.com.
The West New York Women’s Club will hold their third annual walkathon on May 22 beginning at 60th Street and Boulevard East, travelling to Hamilton Park in Weehawken and back. Sign-in begins at 9 a.m. and the walkathon begins at 10 a.m. Men are welcome to join. All of the proceeds from the walkathon will be donated to WomenRising, a group that assists women and their families to achieve self sufficiency and live safe, fulfilling and productive lives, through social services, economic development, and advocacy services.
All participants must have a sponsorship form which can be received by emailing wnywomensclub@aol.com.
The “Taste of West New York” Senior Citizens Mother’s Day Event will take place at West New York Middle School on May 15 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The next monthly meeting of the women’s club will be held on May 17 at Hudson Hall, 6018 Hudson Ave. at 6:30 p.m. Detective Thomas Mannion of the WNYPD Narcotics Division will be the guest speaker. He will discuss the identification and hazards of the drug “Ecstasy” in the community.

Free concert in Union City

Union City will be presenting a very special performance of “Jose Rodriguez in Concert” on May 13 at 7 p.m. at the Union City Performing Arts Center located at 2500 Kennedy Blvd.
The concert will feature Jose on bass accompanied by two violins, a viola, piano, and percussion, in a concert where classical music meets jazz & Latin. He will be featuring music from his latest CD, “Moments in Life.”

Free pregnancy health fair

Palisades Medical Center will be hosting “Everything you need to know about Your Pregnancy” on Saturday, May 15 from 2 to 5 p.m.
Physicians, midwives, nutritionists, lactation consultants, and other health professionals will be present to discuss everything about pregnancy, from preconception to postpartum recovery.

Correction

In last week’s article, “Heading to the polls,” it was stated that Mayor Brian Stack obtained a bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in criminal justice from Jersey City State College.
However, the information, obtained from an informational voter website not run by Stack, is incorrect. Stack attended the institution but did not get those degrees. Stack confirmed this week that he is a graduate of Emerson High School in Union City.
