Officials ID body of burned JC man
Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio said on Wednesday that homicide detectives have identified the burned, dead body of a Jersey City man found Tuesday afternoon under the East Linden Avenue Bridge in the city’s Greenville section.
They said the man is William Smith Jr., 42, of Lembeck Avenue in Jersey City.
DeFazio said Smith had no permanent home and the Lembeck Avenue address was his last known residence.
DeFazio said the body, discovered by a passenger riding the light rail that runs near the bridge, was found lying face down with a gasoline can nearby. DeFazio said cause of death still being investigated.

Macy’s fireworks will return to the Hudson
For the second year in a row, Hudson County’s waterfront cities will once again be treated to a front row seat to this year’s Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks. The show is returning to the Hudson River this July 4.
The colorful explosions will be fired off from six barges in the Hudson River located between the area of 24th St. and 50th St. in Manhattan.
The 34th annual Macy’s fireworks display will begin at approximately 9:20 p.m. on July 4. Additional information about the show will be released after June 1, Macy’s says. Macy’s has a fireworks hotline at (212) 494-4495.
Latino leaders being honored at dinner
Latinos will be honored with the 2010 Maria DeCastro Blake Community Service Award during a dinner program on Saturday, May 8 in the multipurpose room of the Gilligan Student Union Building at New Jersey City University in Jersey City. Festivities begin at 6 p.m. with a reception and silent auction.
Honorees are Dr. Thomas R. Ortiz of West Orange, Teresa Lugo of Jersey City, and Henry Acosta of Plainsboro. In addition, Sonia Araujo of Jersey City will be honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award. New Jersey City University will receive a Contributor’s Award.

Newport race this coming Saturday
The Seventh Annual Riker Danzig Newport 10,000 road race will take place Saturday, May 8, at Newport Town Square in Jersey City.
More than 750 runners are expected to participate, including an impressive field of American and International elite runners vying for $12,000 in prize money. The race will once again serve as the 2010 USA Track & Field (USATF) NJ Men’s and Women’s Open 10K Championship Race.
Registration for the event begins at 7 a.m. at Newport Town Square, located at Town Square Place and River Drive South. Participants will then take their marks for the 8:30 a.m. start.
Post-race festivities, including music, refreshments and special prize drawings from Newport’s boutiques and restaurants, will follow at 10:30am after the race concludes.
