Before the 1999-2000 high school basketball season tipped off last month, St. Peter’s Prep head coach Joe Macchi didn’t know what to expect from his young team that featured only two seniors. “I think the biggest question I had with the team was chemistry,” said Macchi, who was entering his third year as the Marauders’ head coach. “I wondered how the new kids would play together. Once they found each other, I thought they had the potential to be pretty good.” But even an optimist like Macchi had no idea that the prospects would look so bright right away.
