HUDSON COUNTY – An earthquake centered in Ontario, Canada, on Wednesday was felt in Hudson County, believe it or not – including in Hoboken and Secaucus.
On Wednesday, a woman living on Jefferson Street in Hoboken called the paper to say, “I think we just had an earthquake.” She reported that she felt her building shake.
The Leader newspaper reported that a building on Wall Street West in Lyndhurst was evacuated Wednesday when people felt tremors. A person leaving a comment on the Record of Hackensack’s website said, “Felt building shake in Secaucus as well. Weird feeling of ‘dizziness’ for about 10 seconds.”
The quake was determined to register 5.0 on the Richter scale.
Earthquakes centered in New Jersey itself are rare, and have stayed under 5.0 for the last 200 years, according to a story in this month’s New Jersey Monthly Magazine.
