12 events planned today to protest mass detention of immigrants

STATEWIDE — More than 40 religious, community and civic organizations planned to host vigils, rallies and events at a dozen county seats, including in Hudson County, Thursday to protest local immigration enforcement policies that they say “are tearing families apart, wasting taxpayer money and making us all less safe.”
Participants will be calling attention to the policies currently in place in NJ which they fear may lead to a similar situation as is happening in Arizona. Organizers are pointing specifically to the detention of over 1000 immigrants in five county jails and the Elizabeth Detention Center, agreements with Hudson and Monmouth County jails, and over a half dozen anti-immigrant bills proposed in the state legislature.
In Hudson County, the protest will take place from 2 to 4 p.m. beginning at Journal Square ending County Administration Building. Contact: Fr. Gene Squeo, NJ Forum for Human Rights, 201-207-0112 for more information.
