Hundreds of young environmentalists from southern and northern New Jersey walked side by side to slam dunk the junk at Liberty State Park on Friday, March 19, as part of the Second Annual Clean Communities Environmental Student Exchange, which provides students an opportunity to learn about litter and waste management in regions other than their own.
The event was hosted by the Clean Communities Council Inc. (CCC), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation funded by the state of New Jersey to reduce litter through education, in collaboration with the cities of Bayonne and East Orange, the Hudson County Improvement Authority and PSEG.
The Environmental Student Exchange program is part of the Council’s Slam Dunk the Junk statewide anti-litter campaign, created in response to a legislative mandate to educate people about proper handling of waste and to encourage New Jersey residents to put trash where it belongs — in cans or recycling bins rather than on the ground or in the water.
