HOBOKEN AND BEYOND – Former Hoboken Mayor Peter Cammarano, who was arrested in a statewide FBI political corruption sting operation a year ago, was sentenced to 24 months in federal prison Thursday morning.
Cammarano will have to report to jail on Sept. 29.
He will also have to undergo another two years of supervised release after he leaves.
His defense attorney, Joseph Hayden, requested that he be placed in Lewisburg Penitentiary in Pennsylvania, a prison with both high and low security components. The judge may consider but is not bound by the request.
Last year, Cammarano was arrested for allegedly taking campaign money from an FBI informant posing as a real estate developer, allegedly in exchange for future help with development projects. His arrest came a mere three weeks after taking office. He was replaced by present Mayor Dawn Zimmer, who was at the time the City Council president.
Cammarano at first said he was innocent, but he pleaded guilty earlier this year.
