BREAKING: State approves plan for 18 Hoboken City Hall employees, 18 cops to be laid offAffected workers will now get notifications from city

HOBOKEN — The city of Hoboken on Wednesday received a letter from Kenneth Connolly, Director of the Division of State and Local Operations at the New Jersey Civil Service Commission, stating that the layoff plan submitted by the city has been approved.
In order to save money, Mayor Dawn Zimmer announced two weeks ago that the city will lay off 18 city workers and another 18 police officers, and demote 19 senior police officers.
The intention is to save $2.5 million in the city payroll, although the Police Department’s two unions have said that money will be lost in other ways. They also have complained that the city is not instituting other cost saving measures, and noted that the city recently gave large raises to two mayoral aides – in one case, raising the city’s spokesman from $60,000 to $75,000 the same week the layoffs were announced.
City Hall said Thursday that the city will now begin implementing the plan and notifying affected employees of their layoffs.
