800 WNY kids begin summer soccer season

The town of West New York recently kicked off its annual “in-house” youth soccer season with an Opening Day Parade on July 17. Approximately 800 kids take part in the West New York Recreation Soccer Youth League, which plays from the middle of July until school begins in early September.
The free program is open to youths from ages 5 through 17.

“I think it’s great for kids that don’t go to school with one another to meet new kids,” said West New York Recreation Director Tim Nagurka. “And it gives the kids a chance to compete.”

Beautiful sight at night

There are around 20 to 25 teams total, with one or two coaches per team. And a match can often be seen on any given night at Centennial Field on Port Imperial Road along the waterfront.
“The mayor provides us with a wonderful facility,” said Nagurka. “It’s a beautiful field lit up at night.”
Playoffs are held towards the end of August into early September. The entire season will culminate with a pool party thrown by Mayor Sal Vega, during which trophies and awards are handed out.
Everyone who participates in the program receives a certificate and medal.

Everyone is accepted

The summertime soccer program is one of many free sports programs available for West New York youth. In the fall, West New York will once again provide free coaching and equipment for youths in the football, cheerleading, and soccer programs.
There are no tryouts for the teams. All children are accepted into the sport of their choice. In order to register, all parents need to bring is a proof of residence.
Nagurka said that even though the summer soccer season is already a few weeks underway, interested youth can still participate.
“We never turn a kid away,” he said.
