SECAUCUS – Tonight the New Jersey State Health Planning Board will hold a public meeting on the proposed sale of Meadowlands Hospital Medical Center.
The two hour hearing will begin at 6 p.m. and will take place at Secaucus High School, located at 11 Millridge Road in Secaucus.
The hospital’s current owner, LibertyHealth System, has an offer to sell Meadowlands to MHA, LLC, a Newark-based group of private investors. MHA, which has made verbal promises to keep Meadowlands Hospital an acute care facility for at least seven years, has said the facility loses $700,000 a month and is in danger of closing if MHA doesn’t take over and make it profitable.
However, unionized workers at Meadowlands Hospital are concerned about whether MHA will retain the current staff after the sale is finalized. The state Department of Health and Senior Services and the State Attorney General office must still approve the sale, reported to be about $16 million.
Although the sale deal is still pending, one official with knowledge of the deal said today that MHA will take over day-to-day operations at the hospital beginning Sept. 1. – E. Assata Wright
