Family affair

Mother and daughter open new art exhibit

One mother-daughter duo is keeping photography all in the family. Hoboken resident and photographer Terriann Saulino Bish and her daughter, Alyssa Bredin, teamed up three years ago to produce artsy and moody photography that has recently appeared in Hudson County’s Palisade Magazine.
A new art show called “Double Threat” is the pair’s first photography exhibit, featuring 10 haunting images at McCarthy’s Pub, 104 Hudson St. in Hoboken.
“It’s pretty cool working with my mom,” Bredin said. “Sure, sometimes it can get pretty annoying, but it’s good to work with someone you’re so close to.”
An opening reception for “Double Threat” was held on Sept. 11, featuring live music from the heavy-metal rock cover band Devil You Know.
“The bar was packed,” Bish said about opening night. “There were people walking over to me and showing interest in our stuff, telling me how much they liked the work. It was a lot of fun.”

One of the show’s signature pieces, “WTC Tribute 2007,” is an image of the memorial spotlights at ground zero taken in 2007. “I had taken a photograph of the World Trade Center lights a couple of years ago,” Bish said. “It was very touching to me.”
According to Bish, the exhibit will be up all month, featuring slideshows of the photography on the bar’s eight flat-screen TVs and multiple bands providing live music.
“I was a little nervous,” Bredin said about opening night. “But the whole night was really exciting.” For Bish, it was more a matter of worrying about getting just the right pictures hung on the barroom walls.
“I wanted to make sure all the work had the same mood,” she said. “Everything has a little bit of a moody, eerie feel. That’s typically how I capture things.”
“Double Threat” is a mixed media art exhibit featuring mostly photography, combined with graphic artwork. “I had to mix in my graphic element, and digitally painted some of the pieces,” Bish said. “There’s a good mix of landscapes. I didn’t want to hang too many portraits, but a lot of scenery stuff.”

Family photography

Bish, who is a graphic designer for the Hudson Reporter, has worked in the industry for almost two decades, landing images in the reputable “Best of Photography 2009,” a worldwide contest of more than 23,000 annual entries sponsored by Photographers Forum & Canon. Her daughter, Alyssa Bredin, is currently majoring in graphic design at Saint Peter’s College.
“I needed an assistant for freelance shoots,” Bish said. “I let her take some pictures when we were setting up and realized she’s really pretty good.” The pair has been working together for over three years.

Working with mom

Bish said that working with her daughter has significantly broadened her artistic eye. “Alyssa has a completely different viewpoint of things than me,” she said about her daughter. “It gives you a different insight when someone so close to you has such a diverse creative perspective.”
Although the artistic twosome is quite close, they admit it can be hard working with family.
“Sure, you get into your little tiffs,” Bish said, but added they are usually forgotten just as quickly as they began. For more information about the pair, visit: www.tbishphoto.com.
