Arrest made in Laundromat theft
Police have arrested Andre Johnson, 34, of Jersey City, in connection with the late-August theft of cash from the Quick Clean Laundromat at 50th Street and Park Avenue.
According to the police report of the original incident, Johnson allegedly entered the office at the Laundromat and took $300 in cash. The owner later found out about the theft when he noticed the missing money and checked out surveillance tapes to see what had occurred.
Johnson has been charged with burglary and theft.
Alleged small change thief arrested on big charges
Julio Almodavar, 47, of Union City, was arrested and charged with burglary of an auto and theft on Sept. 6 after witnesses reported that someone was trying to get into parked cars on 46th Street around 11:30 p.m. According to police, the witness said the suspect was wearing plaid shorts and a light-colored shirt. Responding officers observed Almodavar, in plaid shorts and a light colored shirt, walking away from a 1998 Nissan. Upon investigation, they found that the vehicle had been entered. The owner of the car confirmed that a small amount of change had been taken from the car.
Police pursued Almodavar and arrested him. $1.29 in change was found on him upon his arrest.
Friendly disagreement gone wild
On Sept. 7 at 11:30 p.m., police were called to the scene of a Fulton Street residence where a man who had gotten into an argument with residents of the area was allegedly standing in the middle of the street shouting obscenities.
Paul Norris, 35, of North Bergen, had been visiting friends when a disagreement ensued and he allegedly became irate and began screaming profanities. According to police, alcohol had allegedly been involved in the incident.
When police arrived on the scene, they attempted to calm Norris and stop him from screaming, but he allegedly did not comply.
Norris was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct.
Three arrested for underage drinking
On Sept. 4 at approximately 3 a.m., three people were arrested for underage drinking at “Triangle Park.”
According to police, officers on patrol near the area of the park, which is located on Harbor Boulevard near the Chart House restaurant, noticed a group of people in the park.
As the officers neared the group, they observed the group allegedly drinking beer, which violates a local ordinance.
Ashley Mateo and Elizabeth Morales, both 18 and of North Bergen, and Jeffried Jiminian, 20, of Lyndhurst, were arrested and charged with underage consumption of alcohol and consumption of alcohol in public.
Car windows smashed on Hackensack Plank Road
Two separate incidents of smashed windows took place on Hackensack Plank Road over the past couple of weeks. Sometime between Sept. 10 and Sept. 13, the owner of a 1996 Dodge van reported that the driver side window had been smashed while they were away on vacation.
And overnight between Sept. 12 and Sept. 13, the owner of a 2010 Honda wagon reported the passenger window on the car had been smashed. A cinder block was found inside of the Honda; however, nothing was taken from either vehicle.
Stolen Ridgefield Twp. car found in Weehawken
Around midnight on Sept. 11, a 1997 Ford that had been reported stolen in Ridgefield Township was recovered near the area of Shippen Street and Hackensack Plank Road. Police said that during a routine check of the area, the car, which was parked and unoccupied, came up in the computer system as stolen.
Deputy Chief Jeffrey Fulcher said that residents often report unusual cars that haven’t been moved for awhile in their neighborhoods, and the recent implementation and monitoring of the residential parking sticker has also helped identify potential problems with cars.
Fulcher urged residents to be vigilant in their neighborhoods and report when anything looks out of the ordinary.
“Residents eyes and ears are critical to knowing what’s going on in the neighborhood,” he said.
Commuter bus catches fire
On Sept. 11 at approximately 11 p.m., a commuter bus caught fire near the 600 block of Boulevard East. North Hudson Regional Fire and Rescue responded, and there were no injuries; however, the damage to the vehicle was so severe that it had to be towed.
The cause of the fire is unknown.
Attempted break-in on 48th Street
According to police, while residents were away on vacation between Aug. 23 and Sept. 9, someone attempted to break into a first floor residence on 48th Street. Although the attempted break in was unsuccessful, responding officers did find pry marks.
