Anti-pipeline group to bring ‘Gasland’ screening to Jersey City

The No Gas Pipeline group, based in Jersey City, is showing at the Landmark Loew’s Jersey Theater for a screening this coming Friday, Nov. 6 of Josh Fox’s documentary, Gasland.
The film examines the controversial practice of hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, that companies are using to extract natural gas from the earth, and shows that the method brings with it many dangers.
The anti-pipeline group says the increase of the supply of natural gas in the region is why Spectra Energy wants to build its controversial pipeline extension through Jersey City.
After the documentary screening, which is doubling as a fundraiser for the group, there will be a panel discussion on the film and on the Spectra Energy proposal, featuring Mayor Jerramiah Healy; City Council members Steven Fulop, Viola Richardson and Michael Sottolano; and several others.
While Spectra Energy has not yet submitted its final plans for the pipeline, both Mayor Healy and the No Gas Pipeline group have declared their intent to file for intervenor status as soon as they are allowed; this move will give both parties more standing to fight the proposal in front of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), which will ultimately decide whether or not to approve the project.
The program is at Loew’s Theater, 54 Journal Square, Jersey City from 4 – 7:30 p.m.
Tickets are $10 donation. All children under 12 accompanied by a paid adult are free. Information: (347) 789-7508 or www.nogaspipeline.org/gasland.
