A bag ban: What did you think?

Last week, we asked you, the readers, if a phased-in plastic bag ban is a good idea in Hoboken. The results are in, and one side received a large majority of the votes. To see the results, go to HudsonReporter.com and check out the Hoboken story entitled “Students say: Ban the bag!”

Holiday Hudson Reporter advertising deadlines

Because of the Thanksgiving Day holiday, some of the Hudson Reporter newspapers will have special advertising deadlines.
For The Secaucus Reporter, The North Bergen Reporter, The Union City Reporter, The West New York Reporter, and The Weehawken Reporter, the deadline for classified and display advertising is Tuesday, Nov. 23, at noon.
The office will be closed on Thursday, Nov. 25, for the holiday. It will reopen on Friday, Nov. 26. If you have questions about these deadlines or any other issue, please call (201) 798-7800. Also check www.hudsonreporter.com.

Special free event at local stores

Local storeowners will come together to present Hoboken Hospitality Week, a two night event full of special events, refreshments, appearances, and promotions on Tuesday, Nov. 30 and Wednesday, Dec. 1. A list of stores that will take part in the event can be found in an advertisement in the newspaper.
On Tuesday, the stores that are taking place in the event uptown will be a part of the promotion from 6 p.m to 10 p.m. The next night, at the same times, downtown local stores will also take part. Pick up a map at any of your favorite local stores.

Thanksgiving meal provided for residents of Hoboken Housing Authority

A full Thanksgiving meal will be presented to Hoboken Housing Authority residents on Tuesday, Nov. 23. The event is sponsored by Hoboken Housing Authority Commissioner and Save the Youth Academy Vice President Jake Stuiver, in conjunction with HHA Executive Director Carmelo Garcia, STY Academy Director Luis Acevedo and Hoboken Mayor Dawn Zimmer.
Seniors will be served from 3 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Multi-Service Center, 124 Grand St. The rest of the Housing Authority community will be served from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the newly renovated community room at 411 Marshall Dr. Donations are being sought to cover the cost. Local assembly representatives applaud workforce training grant

Assemblyman Ruben Ramos (D – Hoboken) and Assemblywoman Caridad Rodriguez (D – West New York) on Thursday applauded the award of a $148,000 training grant by the New Jersey Department of Labor to help residents in the 33rd Legislative District improve their workforce skills. The grant has been awarded to Stevens Institute of Technology, which will provide $217,109 in matching funds to help deliver workforce training to 390 individuals in the areas of quality control, enterprise resource planning, business administration, and business communication within the healthcare and bioscience sector.

‘Cake Boss’ to appear at college fundraiser

The Hudson County Community College Foundation will officially inaugurate the holiday season with the gala celebration of its 13th Annual “Holiday Extravaganza” on Thursday, Dec. 2 in the College’s Culinary Arts Institute/Conference Center, 161 Newkirk St. in Jersey City, at 6 p.m.
Proceeds from the event help fund student’s scholarships, faculty-development programs and the college’s physical expansion.
The guest of honor at the “Holiday Extravaganza” will be Buddy Valastro of Carlo’s Bakery in Hoboken, the star of the TLC TV reality show, “Cake Boss.” Mr. Valastro will receive the Foundation’s 2010 Distinguished Service Award, which is presented to community members who work to improve the quality of life for the people of Hudson County. He is also an honorary board member of the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
Individual tickets for the event — which includes a sumptuous dinner feast prepared by the chef-instructors from the college’s nationally acclaimed Culinary Arts Institute — are available for $500 each. Sponsorship opportunities are also available and range from Partial Scholarship Sponsor at $1,400 to Dinner Sponsor at $20,000.
Additionally, the Foundation will hold its annual “Lucky Odds Raffle” at the event. Tickets for the raffle are offered at $100 each and 50 percent of the “Lucky Odds Raffle” ticket-sales proceeds will be utilized for scholarships and the college’s development. The remaining 50 percent will be awarded in prizes, with 40 percent going to the Grand Prize ticket holder, 6 percent to the Second Prize holder and 4 percent to the Third Prize holder.
