New Housing Authority board member sworn in to replace Cheatam

JERSEY CITY – Until last week, the Jersey City Housing Authority had an empty seat on its seven-member Board of Commissioners for over a year, due to the resignation of Edward Cheatam after his arrest in July of last year in the FBI sting in which 44 people were taken into custody.
Now his seat has been filled by Russell Robinson, a resident of the city’s west side and a financial advisor for Chase Investment Services, who was sworn in on Wednesday at the commissioner’s monthly meeting.
Robinson, a Philadelphia native, is a graduate of Howard University’s School of Business and also studied at American University.
After the board meeting, Robinson said he “looked forward” to dealing with housing issues and plans to “tweak” a few things in Jersey City public housing, but did not give specifics.
Housing Authority Executive Director Maria Maio declined to comment when asked why it took over a year to install a new board member, except to say that it was contingent upon the City Council. The council approved Robinson as a Housing Authority board member at their Oct. 27 meeting. – Ricardo Kaulessar
