Jersey City plans to lay off 82 cops

JERSEY CITY AND BEYOND — Facing an ever-present budget deficit, Jersey City announced Wednesday that it will ask the state for permission to lay off 82 police officers and seven civilian police employees. Negotiations between the administration of Mayor Jerramiah Healey and the Police Officers Benevolent Association to save money in other ways apparently broke down this week.
Last week, at a council meeting, police officials protested the proposed cuts. They warned that the city’s statistical decrease in crime could reverse if there is less security.
