Sires calls for rejection of gas line

Rep. Albio Sires sent a letter last week to Chairman John Wellinghoff of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, rejecting the proposed pipeline that would run through Jersey City and Bayonne.
Sires said that after reviewing the proposal, speaking to the mayors of Jersey City and Bayonne, and taking careful consideration of concerns voiced by the various community groups in both towns, he concluded that Spectra Energy Corp’s plans are ill-conceived.
“Citizens simply do not want this intrusion in their neighborhood out of legitimate safety concerns. Additionally, I strongly oppose the construction of Spectra’s proposed natural gas pipeline in Jersey City and Bayonne, and I would encourage the Commission to reject Spectra’s proposal and not overlook the dangers that it poses to the residents of the 13th Congressional District,” said Sires.
