A funeral service was held Jan. 4 at Monumental Baptist Church, Jersey City, for Emily Odell Yarbrough. She passed away Dec. 27. Born in Semora, N.C., she was the first licensed African-American female barber in Jersey City. In addition to her work as a barber, she worked for the Jersey City Public School System as a teacher’s aide for 22 years at P.S. 24 and P.S. 22. An active member of Monumental Baptist Church, Emily served on many clubs and held various positions. She was also active in the Eastern Star where, over the years, she held various positions. The family matriarch, Emily leaves to mourn her daughters, Magaro Anne Nickson and Mary (Jerome) Pollard; one sister, Helen Johnson; one brother, James McGhee; her sister-in-law, Carrie Jeffries; four grandchildren, Keshia (Jeff) Royster, Lamont (Karen) Bethea, and Maryland and Gerard Bethea; seven great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; godson, Larry Franklin; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
