UPDATE: Contract for Hoboken schools superintendent had proposed salary of $175K

HOBOKEN – As their official comment on Wednesday, the New Jersey Department of Education released a letter which was sent to Hoboken Board of Education President Rose Marie Markle indicating that the proposed contract for Dr. Mark Toback, which would offer him a $175,000 annual salary to be superintendent of schools, was rejected by the Essex County Superintendent.
“Please be advised because: (a) the salary exceeds the maximum allowable amount as set forth in the new regulations; (b) the merit bonuses lack some of the required language concerning the Executive County Superintendent’s role; and (c) the contract provides an unspecified number of holidays….” began a sentence in the letter from Dr. Lawrence Feinsod, the Essex County Executive Superintendent. Dr. Timothy Brennan, the Acting Hudson County Executive Superintendent, consulted with Feinsod in review of the proposed contract, according to the letter.
The proposed salary caps, which become effective in February 2011, will limit a superintendent of the district the size of Hoboken from receiving an annual salary in excess of $150,000 plus a $2,500 high school salary increment.
“Please let me know if you have any questions or would like to discuss this further,” Feinsod wrote in the letter to Markle.
The Board has said they will continue their negotiations with Toback. The next Board of Education meeting is on Jan. 11, at 7 p.m., at 1115 Clinton St. For a longer story on this matter, see the earlier up-to-the-minute news post here at www.hudsonreporter.com. — Ray Smith
