Dear Editor:
On behalf of the Jersey City Medical Center, a RWJBarnabas Health facility, I would like to thank everyone who helped make the Newport-Liberty Half Marathon possible. This event is important as the proceeds directly benefit hospital programs and services. Over 3,000 runners participated and with the increased security needs the Jersey City Police Department and the JCMC EMS worked together to ensure the protection and safety of all. Thank you to Mayor Fulop and Public Safety Director Jim Shea for their concern for public safety at this major event which brings thousands of people to our city. The event sponsors including the LeFrak Organization; T-Mobile; New Jersey Beer Company; COSI; Newport Swim and Fitness; and NJ.Com ensured the event was successful.
We could not have held the marathon without the help of several hundred volunteers who insured a smooth check in, operated water stations and helped control traffic along the course. In addition we would like to thank the Newport community and the LeFrak family for their continued support and for the thousands of dollars raised every year. As a not for profit hospital, the proceeds of the race support Jersey City Medical Center, our Emergency Department and our regional trauma center, serving Hudson County.
Joseph F. Scott,
FACHE President and CEO
