TIME OF SERVE
QUESTION: In high school volleyball, following the referee’s signal to serve, how many seconds does the server have to complete the serve (12, 10 or 5 seconds)?
ANSWER: Ball must be contacted for serve within five (5) seconds of referee’s (R1) signal. Penalty- loss of rally and point awarded to receiving squad which also gains right to serve (Rule 8, Sec. 1, Art. 1; Rule 8, Sec. 2, Art. 5, c).
QUESTION: Server on Team (A) starts behind endline, jumps and performs a serve while in air over the court. He/she lands inside the court following serve. Legal serve?
ANSWER: This is considered a legal serve provided jump was from legal position within serving area. Serve is allowed while over the court. Body may be airborne beyond boundary lines as long as serve left floor from within serving area (Rule 8, Sec. 1, Art. 1 & 2).
