Guttenberg free summer concerts on Aug. 16, 25

On Tuesday, Aug. 16, the Cameos will perform songs from the 1950s to the 1970s as part of the free Guttenberg summer concerts. The next concert is on Thursday, Aug. 25, when the Infernos Band will perform songs from the last three decades, including pop and rock music from today.

The concerts are free and run from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Both concerts will be on Boulevard East from 70th Street to 71st street.

Guttenberg woman arrested in connection with Union City man’s death

On Saturday evening, July 30, Kevin Argueta, 22, of Union City was found stabbed to death inside of his bedroom on Mountain Road, according to the press release from the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office.

According to the release, police responded to a call on 317 Mountain Rd. around 6:20 p.m. Police found Argueta on the floor with “multiple sharp force injuries to his body.” Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez said in the release that Argueta was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to the release, The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office and the Union City Police Department located 23-year-old Cateline Hichos of Guttenberg and arrested her in connection with Argueta’s death. She was charged with aggravated manslaughter, hindering apprehension, and several weapons offenses, according to the release. According to the release her bail was set at $500,000 cash or bond.

R&D Council Awards Merit Scholarships awarded to four HCC College students

Research & Development Council of New Jersey will award Merit Scholarships to 19 distinguished STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) scholars at New Jersey community colleges, four coming from Hudson County Community College.

Princess Ezra Abardo of Jersey City, Shari Acosta of North Bergen, Hugo Iglesias of Union City and James Tietchu of Jersey City, all Hudson County Community College students, are recipients of the R&D Council’s 2016 Merit Scholarship. Princess Ezra studies mathematics and hopes to pursue a graduate degree in either mathematics or engineering after college. Shari studies nursing and intends to pursue a career in her field of study. Hugo is studying engineering science and will enter into a career in engineering after graduation. James studies computer science and will enter a career as a software developer.

Each year, the R&D Council awards $1,500 and $750 scholarships sponsored by council member organizations to outstanding community college students studying in a STEM field. It awards these scholarships to New Jersey students based on applicants’ minimum 3.5 grade point average, STEM field of interest, extracurricular activities, financial need, other awards, and post-graduation career goals. As a broad coalition of senior representatives from industry, academia, and government, the members of the R&D Council make these scholarships available through member-donated sponsorships.

In August, scholars will attend the seventh Annual Merit Scholar Luncheon at an R&D Council member’s research and development facility to cultivate further interest in their field of study and strengthen their relationship with the R&D community. Scholars will also be honored at the R&D Council’s 37th Edison Patent Awards Ceremony and Reception on Nov. 3 at the Liberty Science Center.

Police recruitment day at the library

Police will help residents fill out police exam registration forms at both of the town’s library locations. They’ll help those interested in becoming police at the main library on Wednesday, Aug. 10 at 5 p.m. and Wednesday Aug. 17 at 5 p.m. The main library is on 8411 Bergenline Ave.

On Thursday, Aug. 18 they’ll assist residents at the Kennedy Branch at 5 p.m. The Kennedy Branch is located on 2123 Kennedy Blvd.

Free movies under the stars

On Thursday, Aug. 4, “Hotel Transylvania 2” plays at the North Bergen pool at 7 p.m. Admission is $5 for non-pool members, and it’s free for those with a North Bergen Library Card. The pool is located on 2111 91st St. Free transportation is available to the pool from the main branch of the library. Free snacks will be available.

On Thursday, Aug. 11, “Jurassic World” will play at the main library on 8411 Bergenline Ave. at 8 p.m.

On Thursday, Aug. 25 “Batman v Superman: The Dawn of Justice” plays at the recreation center at 8 p.m. The recreation center is located on 6300 Meadowview Avenue. Free admission, snacks, and transportation will be available for the main library and the recreation center showings.
