QUESTION: In high school, baseball and softball, batter grounds to shortstop who throws to first base person who juggles throw as ball is clamped to elbow as batter touches first base. Ump calls batter-runner safe. Correct call?
ANSWERQUESTION: Outfielder catches fair fly ball in glove but drops ball to ground while transferring ball from glove to hand prior to throw back to infield. Umpire calls “No Catch.” Correct call ?
ANSWER: Umpire misapplied rule concerning a catch; this is a good catch as the transfer is a secondary action following initial possession and control. Umpires should wait until entire action of play is completed such as possession, control and voluntary ball release. (BB- Rule 2-9-1; SB- Rule 2, Sec. 9, Art. 1-3).
