Bayonne man stabbed

Pablo Caamano, 33, of Bayonne died on Monday morning after police found him in his parked vehicle in Woodbridge with a stab wound, according to police reports. Allegedly also at the scene was another Bayonne resident, Amarlis Calderon, 32, who was arrested and charged with two counts of hindering a police investigation and for disposing of a knife. Caamano was found at 3:20 a.m. and pronounced dead less than an hour later. Caamano’s death is reportedly being investigated as a homicide.

Axe to grind

The Bayonne Community News published an article last week about an axe donated to the Chief John T. Brennan Fire Museum, in which the finder was mistakenly identified. The local developer who found the axe is Mitch Burakowsky. The correction has been made on our website.

Blazes battled

A firefighter was hospitalized for a minor injury on Saturday while battling a two-alarm rooftop solar panel fire at E&F Warehouse on Pulaski Avenue, according to battalion chief Frank Pawlowski. Two days later, according to the fire department, a fire was extinguished on a small second-story-deck on the rear side of Tortilla Bite & Grill on Broadway between 31st and 32nd streets.

Pepper spray used to break up fight

Police reportedly broke up a fight using pepper spray after the Tierra Caliente Rodeo on Saturday night at the BCB Bank Pavilion, according to online reports. The fight was allegedly over an autographed item from the band that performed that night.

Italian Fest

The first Bayonne Italian Fest took place on Saturday, July 16 at 16th Street-DiDomenico Park, helping to raise awareness and money to fight against lupus, a chronic, autoimmune disease that attacks and destroys healthy tissue. Donations and proceeds went to Daddy’s Sunshine, a lupus awareness group that hosted the event. A bounce castle was enjoyed by kids, and Sweet Treat Divas, Hoboken Cucina, and Maglione’s Italian Ice were on hand.

Recall committee loses a member

The three-person committee to recall Second Ward Councilman Sal Gullace is down to a duo after Ryan Walker met with the councilman and concluded that “there was no wrongdoing sufficient enough that he should be recalled.” The recall effort was launched partly in response to some city council members mistakenly accepting health insurance benefits from the city.

Health Fair rescheduled again

The Bayonne Health Fair was rescheduled for the third time due to extreme heat. Originally planned for July 7, it is now scheduled to take place Thursday, July 21 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The fair is intended to provide free screening by CarePoint Bayonne Medical Center for blood lead, HIV, and cholesterol. The temperature on July 7 was 95 degrees, the following “rain date” was 91 degrees, and the third rescheduled date is predicted to be 90 degrees.

Bridgemen’s last Bayonne performance

The Bridgemen’s last performance in Bayonne will be on Saturday, July 23 at 6 p.m. at Veterans Stadium, on West 25th Street. In conjunction with Fusion Core, they are hosting the final “Tournament of Stars” drum competition show. Their two last performances will be at the DCI Eastern Classic in Allentown, PA, on August 6 and will be at the Drum Corps International Semi-finals in Indianapolis, saying goodbye in front of 20,000 people.
