Secaucus Mayor Michael Gonnelli recovering from stroke

SECAUCUS — The health of Secaucus Mayor Michael Gonnelli was improving at the end of the week after he suffered a stroke on Wednesday evening, the Secaucus town website said Friday morning.
On Wednesday, around 5 p.m., the mayor suffered a stroke at home and was taken to the hospital.
Gonnelli is a lifelong Secaucus resident who served as the supervisor of public works before becoming mayor. His four-year term began in 2013.
On Friday morning, the town website posted: “Mayor Gonnelli remains resting and recovering in the hospital. We have been informed that The Mayor’s condition is continuing to improve and all tests indicate that he is moving in a positive direction. Please continue to keep him in your thoughts and prayers. Kindly refrain from visiting him in the hospital, as the Mayor needs to rest and his family has requested that we respect their privacy. If you would like to send well wishes or cards, please bring it to the Mayor’s Office at Town Hall and it will be delivered to him.
For any [town] needs, please contact the appropriate department or call the Town of Secaucus general number 201-330-2005.”
NJ.com said that Gonnelli was alert and recovering.
The site said, “Town administrator David Drumeler said that Gonnelli’s doctors believe its too early to determine a timetable for the 60-year-old mayor’s treatment and release, but they are ‘encouraged by what they are seeing.'”
Gary Jeffas, the 1st Ward councilman and most senior council member, is handling his mayoral duties as necessary, just as if Gonnelli were on vacation, the site reported.
