Union City to vote regarding ordinance about short-term rentals

UNION CITY — An ordinance that banned short-term home rentals in Union City such as those through Airbnb in Union City may be up for amendment at a Town Commission meeting this Wednesday.

When a group of about a dozen short-term rental hosts met with Mayor Brian Stack in late February, he agreed to allow residents to rent out their homes without penalty until the ordinance was further reviewed, said a Union City resident and AirBnB host last week.

In a letter to local rental hosts in early 2016, Stack wrote, “Short-term vacation rentals can jeopardize the safety and welfare of residents and the community due to lack of knowledge of the city and lack of connections to the community.”

An amendment related to the ordinance is on the agenda for the next Board of Commissioners meeting, which is scheduled for Wednesday evening, June 8 at Colin Powell Elementary School. Contact the town clerk’s office to find out the most up to date meeting time, although sources said the meeting has been moved to 6 p.m.

A group of short-term rental hosts plans to attend the meeting with a proposal on how to effectively regulate rentals, said a Union City resident.
