Penguins and Islanders duel to OT draw

Coming in at (0-1), the Islanders set their sights on reboundng after their 10-2 opening day shellacking at the hands of the Devils as they took on the Penguins in a JCC of Bayonne Sr Division floor hockey showdown. Hitting their stride right out of the gate, the Penguins took a 2-0 lead as Logan Mazziota blasted in a pair of goals off assists by Nicholas DePinto and Megan Feeley. Bouncing back after a slow start, the Isles answered as Alex Riboldi and Jacob Kowal drilled in bullseyes while Drew Radil and Elliot Santana notched assists. Keeping pace with each other, the Penguins’ Logan Mazziota and the Isles’ Drew Radil made it 3 all going into the halfway mark. Going toe to toe, the Penguins landed two body blows as goals by Megan Feeley and Mazziotaput the Pens up 5-3. Chipping away the Islanders cut, the Penguins’ advantage to 5-4 as Drew Radil zipped in a half court scoring strike. Two minutes later the Penguins regained a two goal lead as Mazziota railed in his fourth goal of the bout. Trailing 6-4, the Islanders turned the tide with a shorthanded goal by Jacob Kowal. Sparked by the iron willed goal tending of Emya Irwin, the Islanders surged out to a 7-6 advantage as Radil and Kowal blasted in net jets. Down for the first time all game, the Penguins had just five minutes to claw back and at the 35 second mark, the Penguins’ Logan Mazziota answered with a game tying goal to force a “sudden death” overtime period. With fans and coaches on the edge of their seats, the action heated to a boiling point but brilliant goal tending by the Penguins’ Matt Doyle and the Islanders’ Emya Irwin proved to rule O.T. as the brawl ended in a hard fought 7-7 tie.
