Seventeen people displaced after fire ripped through 26th Street building

The Bayonne Fire Department arrived at 124 West 26th Street at 6 a.m. on April 18 in response to heavy smoke billowing from the roof of a 2.5 story home, Bayonne Fire Chief Keith Weaver told an online news source.
About 50 firefighters responded, including the Jersey City Fire Department. They battled the blaze for two hours before the flames were tamed.
Weaver told reporters that three firefighters were treated at the Bayonne Medical Center, and Seventeen people from four families were displaced and are receiving assistance from the American Red Cross.
According to reports, Argentina and Humberto Valdez have been the homeowners for 15 years. They were sleeping when the fire started and were awakened by two men banging on the front door.

Another Carnival liner coming to Bayonne

Royal Caribbean announced that starting in summer 2017 another cruise ship will start to set sail from Cape Liberty. Rhapsody of the Seas is a 1,998-passenger cruise liner that will join the 4,180-passenger Anthem of the Seas in Bayonne’s deepwater port.
Rhapsody will take vacationers on weeklong trips to the Bahamas during the summer. Anthem is sailing all year to the Caribbean and to Bermuda in the summer.
Mayor James Davis praised the deal, and hopes that cruise-goers try local Bayonne shops. He said in a weekly statement, “The decision also further grows the strength of Cape Liberty and will bring not only additional jobs, but also more visitors, both passengers and crew, who will spend their money in Bayonne when they shop local.”
