Fire breaks out on 26th Street

BAYONNE – The Bayonne Fire Department arrived at 124 West 26th Street at 6 a.m. on April 18 in response to heavy smoke billowing from the roof of a 2.5 story home, Bayonne Fire Chief Keith Weaver told an online news source.
About 50 firefighters responded, including the Jersey City Fire Department. They battled the blaze for two hours before the flames were tamed.
Weaver told reporters that three firefighters are being treated at the Bayonne Medical Center and that the nine people who lived in the home have been displaced; five are seeking shelter with the American Red Cross.
According to reports, Argentina and Humberto Valdez have been the homeowners for 15 years. They were sleeping when the fire started and were awakened by two men banging on the front door.
