BAYONNE – A two-alarm fire roared through a 2-1/2-story wood frame building on Avenue A on Friday afternoon, Feb. 12, causing damage to the entire building and to an adjacent building.
At 3:15 p.m., the Bayonne Fire Department responded to the blaze at 754 Ave. A. Firefighters were confronted with heavy smoke and fire showing on the first and second floors.
“Flames burst out from the second floor window in the front of the building while firefighters struggled to get control of the fire from the interior, using numerous fire hoses,” said Fire Chief Gregory Rogers.
“An exterior bucket truck operation was forced into play to get control of the extensive fire that caused substantial damage to the entire building,” Rogers said.
There were no reported injuries.
The building was reportedly unoccupied at the time of the fire. A family of four adults was displaced due to the heavy damage, according to Rogers. All four occupants were accounted for, and are seeking shelter with family or friends.
The neighboring building on the south side suffered damage to the vinyl siding from the intense heat, according to Rogers.
The fire was declared under control at 5:27 p.m.
Firefighters remained on the scene for a few hours extinguishing small pockets of fire that remained in partitions and voids throughout the building.
Mutual aid fire response was received from neighboring communities, and the Jersey City Fire Department was still seen there in the early evening.
The Bayonne Police Department, Bayonne Emergency Medical Services, Building Department, Department of Public Works, Suez Water, and Bayonne Fire Canteen were called to the scene.
The fire is under investigation.
