NIHEN, VIRGINIA M.

Funeral services took place Oct. 29 for Virginia M. Nihen, 97, of Jersey City for most of her life before moving to Van Dyk Park Place assisted-living in Hawthorne. She passed away Oct. 24, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. While at Van Dyk Park Place, she was cared for by a very and compassionate staff of workers. An active member of her community, she was a school teacher at St. Joseph Grammar School in Jersey City for 37 years and a faithful and loyal parishioner of St. Joseph R.C. Church, Jersey City, and a member of its Rosary Society. She was the wife of the late John C. Nihen, and mother of Robert G. Nihen and wife Donna, and grandmother of Robert J. Nihen and Elizabeth L. Nihen. One of 10 children born to the late Michael and Anna Longo, she was predeceased by all of her nine siblings of a very close-knit family. They include brothers Frank (and wife Rose), John (and wife Adele), Rocco (and wife Joan), Morris (and wife Mary), Nicholas, Anthony and Angelo, and sisters Frances Kornutick (and husband Bill) and Mary Formisano. She is also survived by sister-in-law Eleanor (wife of Anthony) and many nieces and nephews and other family members. Services arranged by the Vander Plaat-Caggiano Funeral Home, Fair Lawn.
