One injured in Bayonne cooking fire

BAYONNE – Bayonne firefighters responded to a fire at a 24th Street residence, and rescued an unconscious woman who had apparently been overcome by smoke from a fire resulting from unattended cooking, a fire official said.

On Tuesday, Oct. 27, at approximately 5:45 p.m., the Bayonne Fire Department was dispatched to 17 West 24th St. on the report of an odor of smoke in the building.

“Arriving firefighters confirmed the odor at that location and discovered that smoke was actually coming from the adjoining attached building at 19 West 24th St.,” said Fire Chief Gregory Rogers in a statement.

Firefighters forced entry to the building, advanced a fire hose, and extinguished a small fire in the kitchen involving a stovetop and some clothing found on the floor, according to Rogers.

Firefighters discovered a female occupant of the building unconscious on the floor in the living room and rescued her. She regained consciousness outside the building and was transported to Bayonne Medical Center.

The woman reportedly unsuccessfully attempted to extinguish the stove fire using a pillow and items of clothing before losing consciousness.

The apartment sustained minimal fire and smoke damage. The department investigator ruled the fire accidental and the result of unattended cooking.
