SERVING ORDER.
QUESTION: In high school volleyball, player on Team (A) serves three aces and is about to continue to serve. Receiving squad, Team (B) cites Team (A) has an improper server. Referees agree. Does Team (A) lose serve? Do the three points scored still count? Is improper server ejected?
ANSWER: Points scored by improper server are erased and Team (A) loses rally. Team (B) gains the serve. Improper server is allowed to stay in set while proper serving order as written in scorebook is adjusted (Rule 6, Sec. 4, Art. 6, Penalty 2-a).
QUESTION: Improper server on Team (A) serves and scores two points before loss of rally. Team (B) then serves and scores one point. Team (B) then cites that Team (A) used an improper server. Referees check scorebook and agree. Does Team (A) lose previous two points? Is Team (B) awarded extra two points?
ANSWER: There is no penalty assessed nor are any points canceled for Team (A). The discovery of improper server happened after the serve alternated and Team (B) actively served the next point. Proper serving order for Team (A) is adjusted and Team (B) maintains serve (Rule 6, Sec. 4, Art. 6, Penalty 2-b,c).
