Bayonne mayor raising hunger awareness by bagging groceries

BAYONNE – Mayor James Davis is partnering with ShopRite of Bayonne to fight hunger by bagging groceries on Wednesday, Sept. 16 at 2 p.m. at the supermarket at 583 Ave. C.
Davis’s effort is part of ShopRite’s annual “Help Bag Hunger” initiative through which the store raises funds to aid food pantries and other community efforts to combat hunger.
Representatives of ShopRite will also attend the annual observance.
The store holds the event in recognition of September being “National Hunger Action Month.”
Nearly 50 million Americans, including more than 16 million children, worry about where their next meal will come from, according to ShopRite officials.
“ShopRite is helping to raise awareness and inspire action within their local communities through its hunger-fighting initiative, ShopRite Partners in Caring, a year-round, community based program that provides funds to local food banks,” a spokesperson said.
Since its inception in 1999, Partners in Caring has donated $38 million to local food banks, supporting more than 1,700 charities that feed the hungry in communities served by ShopRite stores.
