Back to school

All good things come to an end

This year I had a great summer. I did some cool things like going to the pool, camping, riding a bike, hiking, and seeing some friends that live far away from me. I also went horseback riding for the first time. That was a lot of fun and I can’t wait to do it again. I hope that next summer I can take lessons.
I have to say I really enjoyed my summer and I’m sad that it’s over. But at the same time I’m kind of glad to be going back to school. Why, might you ask? Well, unlike many kids, I got lucky that one of my teachers from last year is moving to the fifth grade along me and will be my homeroom teacher. This means I’m not as nervous about having a new teacher or meeting new friends. Another reason why I am excited for school is to see and hang out with my friends. I am also looking forward to fun activities like Zumba, singing, and volleyball the most. I can’t wait for school to start.
I asked two of my friends to see if they felt the same way as I did. My one friend is Adrianna Preiss. She is 9 years old and is going into the 4th grade. She lives in Queens, N.Y.
While we hung out in my trampoline at my summer place, I asked her how she felt about the summer ending and school starting. She said she is very excited for school to start to learn new things and see all of her friends, and that she couldn’t wait for science class. This is one of her favorite subjects in school. She also can’t wait to learn about geometry this year. She wants to learn more in language arts, and math. This is why she is not upset about summer ending. The one thing she will miss are her friends like me and some new friends she made during the summer.
Next I asked her what are a few things you’ve done this summer? She said, “I went to the pool, jumped in a trampoline, visited N.J, and P.A., and, well, I basically had your average summer.”
What are you looking forward to this school year? She responded with, “The harder curriculum. I mean, I love learning more and I love challenging myself to learn more because you are going to need it for when you get older.”
Lastly, I asked are you more nervous or less nervous, and do you think you will be treated differently this school year? She said, “I am a little more nervous because the tests will be harder and there is a big science exam. I feel I will be treated with more responsibility because I am older now.”
We left my place to hang out at Adrianna’s. As we were playing, I interviewed Brooke Hannon, my sister and best friend. She is going into grade 3. She goes to Public School 2 with me.
I asked her if she was excited to go back to school, why or why not? She started off with, “I am excited to go back to school because I get to meet my new teacher and friends. I also like learning math.”
Brooke too was upset that summer was ending. She said, “I have done so many new things and I had the best summer ever I don’t want it to end!” She is a bit nervous about starting school because she has never met her teacher and does not know what to expect. Brooke quickly added that she is not looking forward to homework and tests this year!
She seemed to agree that this year she would be treated differently because she is older and going into a higher grade.

My view

Personally, I am looking forward to learning new things, being with friends, and seeing all the teachers. My school has some of the best teachers! I am not looking forward to the tests and homework either. This year I am not nervous or scared to go back to school. Which I know not all kids can say the same.
Here are some tips to stay cool while going back to school. Tip 1- The week before school starts try and see what friends are in your class. Tip 2 – The night before school take a nice hot stress-free shower before bed. Tip 3- Go to bed early that night and think about the good things that happened during the summer and good things that this school year will bring. Tip 4- Keep an open mind. You might make new friends, love your teacher(s), and learn new things. Remember your friends will always be close by.
