A funeral mass was held Sept. 5 at St. Ann’s Roman Catholic Church in Hoboken for Salvatore Russo. He passed away Sept. 1, at home surrounded by his family after a long, courageous battle.
He was a life-long resident of Hoboken, born to Michael Russo and Carolina Montesano Russo. Not long after graduating Demarest High School he was drafted into military service in December 1943, and served as a staff sergeant in the Third Armored “Spearhead” Division under General Patton. He landed on Normandy Beach on D Day and fought in the Battle of the Bulge, among other fronts, for which he received a Bronze Star for heroism, two Silver Service Stars, a Purple Heart, and various other medals for valor.
Upon his honorable discharge, Sal attended Seton Hall University and received a graduate degree in business from New York University. He worked his way up to vice president at Royal Globe Insurance Company, where he worked for over 30 years. He was proud of his Italian ancestry, was a devout Roman Catholic, and a loyal fan of the New York Yankees.
He was a loving and devoted husband and father whose greatest joy was spending time with his family both at the Jersey Shore and on vacations around the world. He was loyal and caring with a keen sense of humor and enjoyed the camaraderie of his friends and good times spent together.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Pauline; his daughters, Linda, her husband, Dr. Joseph Lombardi; Janet, her husband, Dr. Ken Cubelli and his eight grandchildren Dr. Adriana Lombardi, her husband, Donald Stanzione, Marc, Dr. Joseph Lombardi, Christina, Peter, Paul, Stefani, and Michael.
