Dear Editor:
Permit me to lead this letter with gratitude to this newspaper for publishing my letters about the plight of the Monarch Butterfly. At 1:45 p.m. on August 10, Megan’s small butterfly garden in dense Union City, recorded its first Monarch butterfly. Megan verified it with a photograph. I, myself, witnessed it from my home’s window. The following overcast day, I saw another Monarch flying along the tree tops near Washington Park’s dog run. Thank you Megan for planting flowers for butterflies and the first butterfly “way station” for migrating butterflies in her garden in all of Union City. Thank you to Ed, for sharing an article about the Monarchs with me (and your compassionate are devoted care of the neighborhood friendly cats). Ed is my most trusted nature spotter and recently saw 3 peregrine falcons—a first—in Union City. Mayor Stack has called me at home and assured me of his support of using empty tree plots on my block for pollinator habitat restoration. He sent a crew to clear the weeds and they did a great job. I am very appreciative of his help.
Union City boasts its cultural diversity and I would like to see it begin to boast of its biodiversity. Let’s bring back the Monarch Butterfly to Union City. All levels of participation are welcome. Continued political support at the local level is crucial and the prospects are promising. Keep your eyes on the lookout for the Monarchs from throughout the country will begin migrating to central Mexico. Please suspend your use of herbicides at this time.
Thank you.
All the best to you,
Raven (Squire)
