To the Editor:
On a recent drive downtown to see the progress on the Bayonne Bridge I had a thought that might help the residents living in the shadows of the bridge as well as our entire community. With the raising of the roadway, the new approach ramps will be higher than the original approach. At some time they will be demolished.
Rather when the time comes to tear down the original approaching roadway, which will be a major demolition project, let them stay in place. Make them a pedestrian walkway much like the much heralded High Line in New York City. Our downtown neighbors will not have to endure the demolition of the approach. The city will reap a new, unique park-like setting for walking, jogging, sitting etc. with some fantastic views of the surrounding area. The old approaches could extend to the beginning of the bridge’s superstructure. I think that the Port Authority and the city could work this out to the benefit of the entire community. Just one lifelong resident’s thought.
