Team Woods blazes the way as Devils claim gold

You could feel the electricity in the gym as the (7-0-1) Penguins and the (4-3-1) Devils warmed up for their JCC of Bayonne Senior Division Floor Hockey “Gold Medal” clash. With their undefeated goalie, Matt Doyle, sidelined with a basketball injury, the Penguins turned to their leading scorer, James Bajor, to man the post at net. For 39 minutes, both squads battled to a scoreless tie as both Bajor and the Devils’ net guru Colin Woods made one breathe taking save after another. At one point in the second period both squads put no less than 10 shots on net during a ten minute stretch as the Devils’ Jacob Kowal, John Bautista, Allen “Lefty” McComb, and Chloe Gregory landed some body-blows while Jared Radil, Megan Feeley, Alejamdro “See Ya” Cifuentes, and Drew Radil answered with laser strikes for the Penguins. As the pressure built to the boiling point, the Penguins’ Kasper Hooks joined forces with Caitlin Feeley on a series of post dingers that almost ended the bouts scoring drought but at 1:01 remaining it was the Devils’ Mackenzie Woods that showed up big as Woods turned a slicing pass from Logan Mazziota into the game’s first goal. Stunned and trailing 1-0 with time fading the “Pens” emptied the net to add a shooter and quickly buzzed the Devils’ net with three shots through the crease but still the Devils held firm. With eight seconds left to play, the Devils sealed the deal as Marek Mickiewicz fought a pass to Mackenzie Woods who sailed a blast full court into the Penguins’ open net as the Devils claimed gold by downing the Penguins 2-0.
