BAYONNE – The city of Bayonne is undertaking major improvements to local infrastructure, including upgrades to many of its streets, Mayor James Davis announced on May 29.
The work has begun with the resurfacing of Orient Street from East Fifth Street to Linnet Street, according to Davis. The area was in “dire need of repair,” and the work there is expected to be completed soon.
In anticipation of undertaking an extensive roads program this year, the city applied for and received more than $600,000 from state and federal grants, according to Davis. That amount will be combined with an additional $600,000 allocated as part of the bond ordinance recently adopted by the City Council, for a total $1.2 million amount dedicated to street resurfacing.
“In recent memory, this is the largest amount allocated to resurfacing side streets,” said Public Works Director Gary Chmielewski.
As soon as engineers finalize the plans, the city will put the work out for bid. Depending on the bids received back, between 40 and 50 blocks will be resurfaced, Chmielewski said.
“Roadway infrastructure directly impacts the quality of life in Bayonne,” Davis said. “Therefore, ensuring that we institute a roads program that reflects the necessity for solid infrastructure is a necessity.”
