HOBOKEN — Marching bands, veterans, and members of local police and fire departments marched up Washington Street from City Hall to the Hoboken Elks Lodge Wednesday evening in honor of America’s armed forces and their many sacrifices.
This year marks the 117th year of Hoboken’s annual Memorial Day parade, the oldest continuous parade in the state of New Jersey.
This year’s Grand Marshal was Ernest Prudente, a Korean War Veteran who served in the Army Medical Corps. After returning home to Hoboken, he joined the Hoboken Fire Department and retired as Captain after serving for 30 years. Prudente has been a member of the American Legion for over thirty years.
The parade also brought a few complaints from residents who Tweeted about the extra traffic or lack of parking during rush hour. A person whose car got towed said the city needed better signage in advance to let everyone know.
