Political games

To the Editor:

I think we all agree, if there is one thing we all dislike in politics, it is corrupt self-serving individuals who do nothing for the citizens who actually elected them to office. Most but not all politicians create a great advertising campaign making promises but then go the opposite direction, once elected. When do we all really learn?
The only way we learn is to do our own research on the candidate, the message, and the feasibility of that individual actually keeping this or her word to you, the voter. Most candidates are chosen by the party and rightfully so because the political party leadership has come together and agreed that this individual has worked hard, made a name for him or herself and has shown leadership qualities. Wait, I forgot, this is Hudson County and yes, this is politics like no other county in our country. All one needs here is either connections or a nomination.
The question that comes to my mind, day after day is when will Hudson County politics actually change for the better? When will we all stand for real change in our county, in our city, in our state? That time will only come when we make our own decisions on who we feel is the best person for the job, the best voice for your county, the best voice for your city. What we hear time and time again is how this candidate is connected, he or she will work hard and will indeed bring the message of the people to the legislature.
I have not heard of any Bayonne or Jersey City candidate fighting for us in Trenton. Yes, they will talk a great game on whatever the party message is and that is fine but what about the people who voted them into office? When does that message ever come to fruition in Trenton? It takes five minutes to check sponsored or co-sponsored bills from your legislator on their website. If not then call their office and request it. What you will find will amaze you, once you make the connections with their donations.
Leadership in Hudson County is dismal, if not embarrassing. They stress unity again and again but they are only fighting among their own party for power and only fighting for their own gains, not ours. In the last three weeks, party leaders have played politics with our Assembly seats by naming candidates and then pulling the backing shortly after. Is this the kind of leadership Hudson County needs? We all deserve better, so let us all start to fight for it together and do our homework.
